Forecasting and preparing for Ice Storms

Posted

For those of you that don't want to be caught in the dark when the next ice storm hits I strongly recommend becoming familiar with the SPIA index. This index is to ice storms what what the Fujita Scale is to tornadoes and the Saffir-Simposon Scale is to hurricanes. This warning system can predict ice accumulation and projected damage days in advance giving those people in the affected areas ample time to prepare. Ice Storms can cripple a community with down power lines and massive loss of property. Preparation is essential and having a pair or two of Spiky Ice Cleats around the house can be the difference between being able to leave your house or being completely trapped inside until your community thaws out.
